Faith in Action: Empowering Lives, Restoring Hope, and Building Resilient Communities in Kakuma & Kalobeyei
Reporter: Thomas, Country Director | Facilitator: Uhuji
International Gospel Response Ministries (IGRM) continues to transform lives in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps through faith-based humanitarian aid, holistic discipleship, youth mentorship, women empowerment, and practical community support — restoring hope, nurturing leaders, and strengthening families in Kenya’s refugee settlements and host communities.

Hope in Action Amid Refugee Camp Challenges
In the Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps, IGRM’s ministry this week illustrated how faith actively transforms communities under challenging circumstances. Despite displacement, hunger, and uncertainty, people gathered to worship, learn, and serve one another, demonstrating that God’s love transcends circumstance.
Through Christian humanitarian aid, community development initiatives, and discipleship programs, IGRM empowered families, nurtured leaders, and brought both spiritual and practical hope to vulnerable populations.
“Even under the scorching sun, singing together lifts my spirit. I feel God is here with us,” shared Amina, a mother of five children in Kakuma refugee camp.
Weekly Highlights & Impact
Seven Worship Services — Experiencing God Indoors and Outdoors
Seven worship services were held both indoors in small shelters and chapels, and outdoors in open-air spaces and community tents in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. Each gathering provided spiritual renewal, prayerful encouragement, and biblical teaching that strengthened resilience.
“Worship makes me feel that God sees our struggles and gives us strength to keep moving,” shared David, a youth participant.
Seven Sunday School Sessions — Nurturing the Next Generation Indoors and Outdoors
Children participated in seven dynamic Sunday school sessions, held indoors in classrooms and shelters as well as outdoors under shade tents and trees. Lessons emphasized faith, kindness, perseverance, and empathy. Creative activities and storytelling helped children connect biblical truths with daily life.
“I want to be like Esther, brave and helping others,” said a 9-year-old girl in Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement.
Four Life-Skills & Vocational Training Sessions — Equipping for Daily Life
Four sessions provided adults with practical skills such as small-business planning, basic budgeting, sewing, and community problem-solving. Participants also explored how faith and work can harmoniously support family stability and personal growth.
“I can now plan small income activities and trust God for guidance,” shared Kulimali, father of three children in Kakuma Refugee Camp
Two Youth Leadership Circles — Building Future Leaders
Two youth mentorship forums focused on servant leadership, mentorship, and community engagement. Participants reflected on personal growth and committed to applying faith-driven leadership in their peer networks.
“I learned that leadership is about serving others, not just being in charge,” said a young leader in Kalobeyei Refugee Settlements.
Three Community Healing & Fellowship Gatherings — Strengthening Bonds
Three fellowship meetings brought together residents for prayer, testimony sharing, and encouragement. These gatherings provided emotional healing, built trust, and strengthened the social fabric within the camps.
“These meetings make me feel part of a family even when I am far from home,” shared Esther, a single mother.
Two Community Service Initiatives — Faith in Action Without Food Aid
This week, IGRM teams organized two service-focused initiatives that did not involve food distribution:
- Community Clean-Up & Hygiene Awareness in Kakuma & Kalobeyei: Residents collaborated to clean shared spaces, latrines, and walkways while learning hygiene practices that protect health and prevent disease.
- Educational Resource Distribution: Children received learning materials, school supplies, and faith-based activity kits to support continued education and discipleship.
“I love the new books and coloring supplies — learning about God while having fun!” said a 10-year-old participant.
Why This Work Matters
IGRM’s programs this week highlight a holistic, faith-driven approach to refugee support in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement:
- Worship services renewed spiritual resilience and hope.
- Sunday schools fostered moral and biblical foundations in children.
- Life-skills sessions built self-reliance, dignity, and practical confidence.
- Youth leadership forums developed Christ-centered leaders.
- Fellowship gatherings promoted emotional healing and social cohesion.
- Community service initiatives strengthened practical life skills, hygiene, and education.
Together, these initiatives reflect IGRM’s guiding principle: Faith that acts. Love that restores. Hope that transforms communities.
Looking Ahead
In the coming weeks, IGRM Kenya will:
- Expand youth mentorship hubs in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement to train new disciples and community leaders.
- Launch women’s micro-savings and entrepreneurial support groups.
- Introduce trauma-healing and counseling programs for displaced families.
- Strengthen Bible study and discipleship leader training to accelerate holistic church growth in refugee camps.
- Increase practical community engagement, linking spiritual support with sustainable skill-building and education.
Through these initiatives, IGRM envisions refugee communities transformed by faith, empowered by skills, and united in hope and resilience.
